Boeing, SparkCognition Launch Joint Venture to Develop Blockchain, AI Solutions

US-based airplane maker Boeing announced on Tuesday a collaboration with SparkCognition to form a joint venture. SkyGrid, as the new company is called, will focus on urban aerial mobility use cases, creating a software platform to integrate autonomous passenger and cargo air aircraft in the global airspace.

SkyGrid, which is based in Austin, Texas, will leverage blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and cybersecurity applications, focusing largely on unmanned aircraft systems traffic management (UTM) and incorporating AI-powered dynamic traffic routing. Thanks to the combination of innovative technologies, clients will be able to conduct a wide range of tasks and services using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), among them emergency assistance, package delivery, and industrial inspections.

Boeing NeXt head Steve Nordlund commented:

Boeing NeXt is a newly created entity that aims to leverage the company’s research and development operations in autonomous flights.

SparkCognition founder and CEO Amir Husain, who will also become CEO of SkyGrid, stated:

“SkyGrid merges expertise in AI, blockchain, security and aviation to deliver breakthrough technological advancements for the rapidly-growing urban aerial mobility industry.”

“By offering scalable and robust capabilities in a single, integrated framework, SkyGrid will make large-scale air vehicle applications more practical and accessible,” Husain added.

SparkCognition applies machine learning tools, along with blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, to develop systems that would help clients convert Big Data and support human and industrial productivity.

In July of this year, Boeing and SparkCognition began working on blockchain-based systems for air traffic control and drone tracking.
