Ethereum Classic was attacked by 51?
« on: January 08, 2019, 07:06:22 AM »
Experts from Blockscout and SlowMist discovered the reorganization of the Ethereum Classic blockchain, Kraken and Bitfly crypto-exchanges increased the number of confirmations, and Coinbase and Poloniex froze work with ETC.

The Ethereum Classic blockchain has changed more than 100 blocks "reorganized" during a potential 51 Attack at the end of Sunday, at least according to two different blockchain explorers-Bitfly (Etherchain) and Blockscout. Coinbase reported on its blog that it found that about 88 '500 ETC had been spent twice (totaling about $ 460'000).

Publication Coinness indicates that private analyst has detected abnormal speed of the hash fall into a single mining pool that could potentially lead to massive reorganization (reorganization) of matched blocks. Although initially supporters of Ethereum Classic denied the situation on Twitter, but Ethereum Classic confirmed a potential cause for concern:

We are currently working with Slow Mist and many others in the crypto community. We recommend that the exchanges and pools to significantly increase the time of confirmation [of the transaction].

SlowMist, a Chinese firm specializing in cybersecurity, which first warned users about the strange activity taking place on the network Monday morning, saying the team is trying to figure out the cause of the attack.

Recent reports Coinness says that hash-private mining pool Ethereum Classic was revealed "some abnormality".

Disputes about the cause of the problem

The duration of the attack seems to be contested. Blockscout reported a block reorganization that occurred at 02:00 UTC and 05:00 UTC on Monday, while Bitfly reported at 17: 00 UTC of the same day that the attack was potentially "ongoing". In its note, Coinbase also writes that " attacks continue."

Andrew Kravenho, Blockscout project Manager, confirmed that although the last recorded attack was seen 14 hours ago, the network is constantly "fluctuating and people are always switching their hashing power", suggesting the possibility of further failure.

The reorganization of the blockchain could begin before he noticed Blockscout. In its blog, Coinbase reported that it first noticed abnormal activity on January 5, two days before other reports appeared.

Although the Ethereum blockchain Classic happened a "huge restructuring", the explanation of what is happening as Cravinho Attack 51 has not received broad agreement.

In response to the deep reorganization, Kraken announced in the incident report that it is increasing the amount of confirmations needed to Deposit ETC into crypto-exchange accounts. Bitfly said that also have adopted this measure. Poloniex has announced that it is disabling wallets ETC, and currently the exchange does not have an accurate time schedule to re-enable them.

Testing of new par Linzhi?

Account Ethereum Classic on Twitter it was claimed that the excess of Herat may have been obtained from the manufacturer of cryptainer Linzhi, who reportedly confirmed that it is testing a new machine hasraton 1400Mh/s.

However, in an email to CoinDesk, Linzhi's Director Of operations, Shenzhen Wolfgang Spraul, said: "We categorically reject such claims, they are absolutely groundless and may be part of the attack itself," adding:

The company has not yet released its first product. If we were testing our ASICs, we would never have done it on the main network, we would have done it on the test network or on the private network. Most likely, we would invite independent industry figures, such as David Vorik or Anthony Lusardi, to look at what we are doing.
