Trump Pledges to Free Silk Road Creator Ross Ulbricht If Re-Elected
Donald J. Trump has pledged to commute Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht’s life sentence to time served if he’s re-elected president.
“If you vote for me, on Day 1, I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht to a sentence of time served,” Trump said during his Saturday night remarks at the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C. “He’s already served 11 years, we’re gonna get him home.”... Read more here (https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2024/05/26/trump-pledges-to-free-silk-road-creator-ross-ulbricht-if-re-elected/).
I have doubt whether he'll actually do it, but it's one of few times he made specific promises which related with cryptocurrency. And for those who don't know about Ross Ulbricht, you probably want to check this website https://freeross.org/ (https://freeross.org/). Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
Edit: I just realized i posted this thread on "Bitcoin Forum" rather than "News related to Crypto", which is a mistake on my side.

Seeing statements like these, we might think that they are nothing more than simple electoral promises, and in fact, it is possible that they are just that. But there are some things that we must take into account, and that could make these statements more than electoral promises.
Trump campaign starts taking cryptocurrency donations, vows to build a ‘crypto army’ (https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/21/trump-campaign-starts-taking-cryptocurrency-donations.html).
News like this may mark a turning point in the path of the cryptocurrency industry. Time will tell us what is true and what is a lie.
P.S. Don't worry, I moved the thread to News related to Crypto.

Why is he committing to freeing him now. He was president the time he was in jail, what did he do about it? Lying pants politicians will say anything at this time to get the votes of bitcioiners. I don't believe a word of what he says with regards to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. All I smell is desperation from Trump. I do not know about his other policies whether they are good or bad but as someone in the bitcoin community, I am going to judge him and make my conclusions about based on his past record during his tenure as president. We should not be gullible, Trump isn't going to do jack for the community. If you wanna vote for him, do it based on personal reasons and not his promises to the community.

I understand that many candidates would usually promise this and that...but if you think that Ross Ulbricht is deserving to be pardoned then in between the two old men running for the White House this November - Trump and Biden, the former and the current - it is Trump that will likely do something on this subject if ever he is given another chance by the American voters...and it can be because Biden has never promised for it and we know that Biden is less friendly to the cryptocurrency industry and the players on it. At least, these libertarians would have something to demand in case Trump can be back as the 47th POTUS as one can never demand it from Biden who never promised such a thing.

I also wonder about that. He could've at least reduce his jail time during his previous term.

Because if he would have done that at that time
- he would still have continued to be president, there was no election looming and for the next one he was leading in the polls
- if he would have done everything he promised, what could he promise now to get votes?
Populists win by promising things, if they would fix everything on their terms, they have nothing, so they need a constant problem for their raison d'etre, people don't always elect politicians based on their track record, but more the people they see fit for the new situations, see Churchill's case for example!

What will that man not say in order to win - will he perhaps pardon Bankman as well?
Honestly, as far as Ross is concerned, he was definitely sentenced to a sentence that is not appropriate (at least for me personally) for what he did. However, I think that Trump is already exaggerating a bit with all these crypto things, especially if we know what he thought about it before - and I personally don't think that he is turning into the new Saylor or something similar.
If he wants to win over everyone who invests in crypto, I advise him only one thing - let him put the tax on crypto at 1% and everyone will vote for him ;D
-
I don't know why Trump cares so much about the founder of the Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht? I mean, does he feel that Ross Ulbricht was wronged by this sentence that was handed down to him? Or is it sending election propaganda signals to the cryptocurrency community?
I understand Trump's promises that he made towards cryptocurrencies and his attempt to win the community's affection and the great propaganda he is promoting for himself as a sponsor of cryptocurrencies, but I did not fully understand why he was interested in the Ross Ulbricht case? I also do not know whether the president has the powers to cancel the ruling issued by the court?

Basically that's what politics is about (in addition to causing 99% of the problems suffered by the population), telling people what they want to hear and then doing what's least convenient for them, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Trump knows that there are more cryptocurrency users in the United States every day, and logically his intention is to obtain the greatest number of votes possible in each niche, and he knows that pardoning Ross Ulbricht would be a key point on his path to the White House. Trump is well aware of the growth of cryptocurrencies in the world and will not take advantage of that growth by only accepting donations in cryptocurrencies.
Very interesting article that talks about this topic: 40% of American adults now own crypto (https://www.security.org/digital-security/cryptocurrency-annual-consumer-report/).
Thanks, i appreciate the assistance.
You are welcome.

Trump mad crazy and will say just about anything to get votes. and that 40% will vote for Trump will put him back to residency.
it will be a long shot to make it happen, Ross is not even allowed to speak or being interviewed by a journalist. there must be something that the government doesn't want out from his mouth and this isn't something that Trump could just pardon.
but it will cool to see Ross out though. if there is one story to be told related to Bitcoin, its Ross version of the story.

I don't think he'll go that far (at least not now) ;D I'm not aware of crypto groups (potential voters) that are calling for his release unlike Ross.

He'll probably have more problems in the long term but good suggestion for election campaign ;D

It would be very tempting promise ;D.

Maybe he expect vote from those who wish to see Ross freed or agree that Ross receive excessive punishment. If you haven't checked https://freeross.org/ (https://freeross.org/), it state almost 600K people signed petition and over 250 organization or public figure support this action.

If he does that he will lose everything, not only obviously turning crypto lovers against him but also a lot of Republicans not involved in crypto who always claimed that Sam was a money launderer for the democratic party, probably he has learned from the mistakes of claiming to drain the swamp and then appointing a former Goldman Sachs employer in charge of treasury.

Yeah right! It will be zero for him and 35% for the rest!
But if anyone had doubts about why he is doing this:
“MAGA supporters, now with a new cryptocurrency option, will build a crypto army moving the campaign to victory on November 5th!” the campaign said.
If you ever want to feel like how garbage feels when it's trash day then vote for this guy and his promises.

If we're going to be honest, he already has so many problems in his life that one more wouldn't bother him too much - if he could win over a certain number of voters to his side in that way, he might do it, but apparently his advisors haven't thought of that yet :)

He does everything to win and there is no doubt about it - just regardless of who wins those elections, I believe that the US will not have a president to be proud of. Obviously, it has already become a tradition for people with whom something is wrong (in every sense of the word) to be appointed to that position.

So far
Nearly 600,000 have signed to free Ross!
That's a big number and something that Trump will contribute to gaining a lot of support, his advisers knew what industry to target to gain support.
But with Trump's record he needs to fully convinced that there's seriousness in his promises Ross could have commuted his sentence because Trump was then the President when he was convicted but he is the president back then and he needs a vote right no.
Now that's two different things.
-
I read something that a president can only make prisoner's sentence shorter but cannot totally void the decision, so he cannot "free" Ulbricht in cell, but if the former is what he mean then he is lying, well, every country has different approach to this so...
But, is there any candidate besides biden and trump to run as president, i knew biden reach his senior age (retirement age) is he still can run as president?

He can free almost anyone guilty of a federal offense, there is no limit unless he chooses to pardon himself or try to pardon someone still under trial, the only one that can restrain that is Congress but this has never happened so basically in theory his powers are absolute, he pardoned Davidson who was under life imprisonment for drug trafficking and murder of an officer, so Ross is nothing.

I'm looking at the positive thing, Trump was supposed to bring ww3 and destroy the US economy, Biden was supposed to bring ww3 and destroy the US economy, Bush, Obama, Nixon....the same. Yet despite that, no ww3 no destruction, the US president despite it's power is still not on the same level of absolute power of decision as a dictator.

That REALLY doesn't make sense, but I guess criminal likes a criminal. I know that a lot of liberteratian people will love to see Ross freed, because "he just provided a market" but remember his place was not just some online weed dealing place, his place had the worst kind of criminals as well, it wasn't just small timers, we are talking about pay to kill type of people as well, some of whom he contacted himself. So there isn't really any reason why he should be freed, I get that bitcoin world could like him for the pioneering bitcoin but that doesn't mean that he did anything legal, dude is proven to be guilty, so there isn't really any reason to let him go.

Oh okay, so what he said is can be done. The question is if will he actually do it? Well, checking his pledges here[1], looks like he did what he can actually do, except for those who needs lot of work to be done.

I don't think that Trump will remain to his promises when re-elected to free Ross Ulbricht. Do you guys remember this?
(https://img.youtube.com/vi/_ipOJOm3BqA/0.jpg) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ipOJOm3BqA)
This is an interview on Trump and was asked about pardoning Julian Assange or Edward Snowden.
"You have two sides of it: In one case, you have sort of a spy deal going on, and then another case, you have somebody that's exposing real corruption.
"I won't say which one, but I feel a little bit more strongly about one than the other....but I could have done it.
"I will say you have people on both sides of that issue. Good people on both sides, and you have some bad people on one side. But I decided to let that one ride, let the courts work it out. And I guess the courts are actually doing that.
"You know, you have a country and it was some spying things and do some bad things released that really set us back and really hurt us with what they did. But [...] I could have gone, I was very close to going the other way."
-
Why on earth do you guys think he would pardon Ross Ulbricht now, when he had 4 years as president to do so, but never bothered to?

Trump is too cowardly to take any of the big, important actions. So it astounds me how he has so many fanboys on social media and off the grid rooting for him to come back to office. IMO you need a sound president who is not afraid of doing these things.

I don't think that this man really means what he says, so even though there are chances that he will fulfill his promise, it is also possible that it won't happen, and he will find an explanation why he couldn't do it.
I would not agree with the fact that Trump is in the category of dogs that bark and do not bite. He is one of those who barks very loudly, and knows how to bite - just remember how he directed his sympathizers to attack and occupy the Capitol, and that the blood of innocent people was spilled there. This is not something that anyone can do, and it should not be ruled out that something like this will not happen again if he is not elected president.

While i shared this news, personally i think such thing is unlikely to happen. But today i see so many news media which roughly state Trump found guilty on all 34 charges. So if he ended up jailed due to those charges, his promise no longer matter anyway.

Someone else would probably end up in prison, or in the best case, his political career would end - but here we are talking about a man who is a candidate for the presidency of the US with a great chance of winning. Those who are with him do not mind such verdict in the least, because the only truth they respect is the one that comes out of his mouth.
In the end, I can agree with him regarding the statement he made after leaving the court, and he says that the only real verdict will be the one on November 5, which means that nothing else is important for him and his supporters.
-
Trump's statements are just election promises aimed at a specific niche: cryptocurrency users. While he was president, Trump had plenty of time to pardon Ross Ulbricht, if he didn't do it during that period of time it was because he didn't want to do it, I think it's that simple. But as we already know, there will soon be new elections for the presidency and Trump will have to look for all the possible votes. In any case, and taking into account the news of the last few hours, I think that now Trump will be more busy with his defense than with the elections.
-
I just checked the website you provided, it's totally new to me, and to be very honest, I was not aware of the full story, I did not know the owner of the site is still in prison and facing a life sentence right now. BTW I think Trump is making the right moves but these moves seem to be so rushing and dying for a win. I mean for a supporter of Ross, this move would be like a good one.
But for not a supporter, they will say he is so desperate to take all the votes of all the crypto users, I mean he is even targeting smaller niches like category to category, first it was NFTs, and BTC, and now he is targeting the followers of influencers as well. As I aforementioned don't know the full story of why he is facing that long punishment, so I won't judge but I will say the punishment should be reduced as he is just an entrepreneur.
