Do you think these concerns will bring benefits of the minimum wage?

Employers of labour that cannot pay their employees are not forced to pay them the minimum wage at that time at which it’s implemented. The government is the regulating body but when they make things hard for this private sectors employer of labour to afford to pay their workers fees, they can’t question them or halt their businesses. It’s a clear and proven fact that an increased minimum wage can lead to job loss, but in a system that not every tier of government obeys the minimum wage, there’s nothing they can do to the private sectors when they follow orders. You can’t be a victim of what you’re trying to stop.
The private sector does not have any excuse to give concerning the minimum wage increments of their staff because if there's any sector of the Nigerian labor force that is not taking care of their staff in terms of salaries is the private sector, workers in the private sector are like slave as they are been overwhelmed with work load and pressure with little salaries to their workers so if the proposed minimum wage is approved the government should take it as a duty to make sure that all sectors implement it and pay their workers what is due to them, private sector should not use government as an excuse to to pay their workers the minimum wage

I doubt if a private business owner will agree to this idea from your perspective. There are private owned establishment that pays penny, maybe due to the size of the establishment, while in other cases, as a result of greed or whatever. But we all know that when the head fails to do the right thing, then we shouldn't expect a perfect action from the others/followers. No doubt, there are some business owners that takes very good care of their workers, we can't dispute that fact, but I fill whatever payment every private owned company or organization or company, wants to pay should be determined by the company. Of course, top companies like Dangote and few others ought to pay a decent amount to some extent, but enforcing that minimum wage on every private sector doesn't sound positive.

Your thesis is wrong. Did you know that aside from bribery and unsolicited payments that some public workers enjoy, they actually don't enjoy much freedom like those in the private sector? Of course this still is restricted to the particular sector you are talking about.
Now I totally disagree with you because the same economy that is bringing down minimum wage and affecting cost of living is the same economy that is also affecting the private sector. All private firms are set up solely for profit and as a result you don't expect them to over pay and eat into their budget. The issue is from the government and not the private sector.

Are you for real? Have you worked in a private sector before saying this? Private sector workers are used beyond their capacity, and they are victimized repeatedly because their salaries come from their employers and not from the government and these employers play god on their employees. The job description of private sector is most times not strictly followed, and employees are made to work more than they ever signed up for. These employees have little or no resistance to being enslaved since these colonial masters called their bosses can easily surcharge them, refuse to pay them for the month or at worst terminate their employment.

I have worked in private establishments thrice and I can tell you for sure, no work is as secure and comfortable as working for the government, especially if it is a federal government employment.

Not from Nigeria but my two cents:

I am of the opinion that every country should have minimum wage regulation since this stops the abuse of workers, because in some countries, employers pay less to the workers, and workers often tend to not have any idea either what should be the ideal wage they should be getting.

You mention that employers might employ less people but the ones who work there will getting wages they deserve, which is big positive, and regarding prices — I can speak for myself, I would not want cheap prices on exploitation of somebody else.

Regulations? In Nigeria? Please forget that chapter. There is no place where rule of law is abused like Nigeria. It's a bad representation but that's a fact. How many companies in Nigeria has been paying the the current minimum wage. Most of them pay half what the minimum wage is paying and labour congress can't do anything about it because some stats government aren't even paying their workers that amount.

Let's agreed that government passed a law and regulations that mandate all business and companies to be paying minimum wage, the country will enter hyper inflation because there is no price control uniformity in the country. The moment there is a uniform minimum wage, every item price will 500% and we will still come back to nothing, your wages will be useless.

I understand what you are trying to express. However the truth is the economy is too bad to expect much from the private sector. If you read carefully through what I wrote you notice that I specified it depends on the private sector you are talking about. For the record it is obvious that the educational sector is definitely underpaid especially in the aspect of the private sector.
However my point is the pay rates that we observe in the private sector is as a result of the effect of the government in the country. If the economy were to get better definitely the private sector would also be affected positively which you also bring about a better pay rate.

I have worked in private establishments thrice and I can tell you for sure, no work is as secure and comfortable as working for the government, especially if it is a federal government employment.
I don't know though, as I've never worked for the government before and don't think I will ever.. the minimum wage wey all argue about, is not even up to the expense we send in a month. Those government workers just try their best to manage them self and still stay in those low pay government jobs due to how the economy is with unemployment.. some of them have other self employed business they are into.. for private jobs though. There are always forced to follow the rules set by their employer. And most of these guys over use their workers just to meet up their monthly target..

Re: What do you think about the minimum wage?
« Reply #53 on: November 15, 2024, 08:15:26 PM »
All private firms are set up solely for profit and as a result you don't expect them to over pay and eat into their budget. The issue is from the government and not the private sector.
Your argument indicated that you are not from the economic field of study and probably you a science scholar. And from your post history you are a science scholar. Nigeria practices a capitalist economic system in which private business are more than the government firms. Though government has the highest labour in the state and when the minimum wage act is enacted, it is affect the private sector too as well. And when we talk about private sector we are not talking about the retail business but firms. Which operated by capitalists. And not government. And government is also looking at those businesses to enact it economic policies. Minimum wage is cut across all the sectors in the country.

And one thing you need to know is the SURPLUS LABOR AND NECESSARY LABOR. and also a term calls alienation. There is no time for me to explain these terms but you can check them up and relate them to labourers and their master. Private workers work more than government workers and yet the excess labour is not paid and that is where the surplus and necessary labour come in and the excess sale of the day is alienated from the workers. And that is why the minimum wage is foe the private workers too.

Well firstly I'll give you a +1 for analysing the concept of capitalism. Anyways I'm not a core Economist however I have a standard understanding of basic and logical economic problems and processes. You are not getting my point Mate2237. I'm not actually arguing I'm just stating facts that have obvious proofs too. Firstly the government sector in terms of labour is just as messy as the private sector. The fact is the private sector can't obviously meet up with the pay rate of the government however based on comparison on the basis of economic effects they are doing way better than the government sector.

Take a look at the educational sector for example where the government have over 6 months of over due salaries at times that are unpaid to public workers on what basis? The economy? Well I wouldn't agree because it's still the job of the government to fix the economy.

It's quite surprising to see that people wants more from the private sectors, when we all know that even the private sectors are still under the federal. The incompetence of the federal and it's consequences is affecting the private business owners as well, so Insisting that they pay minimum wage is clearly unrealistic. Assuming the economy is a little bit manageable to some extent, then it will be very easy to agree to such idea. But seeing the current inflation on ground, private business owners should not be disturb at all, besides, running a business these days comes with a lot of cost.

I no know why e be say na only Nigeria wey court I mean supreme court go give order and Nigerian government won't obey but make that same supreme court pass order for person wey no dey into government and him disobey and see the way the whole Nigerians go react both on social media platforms and every other places.

If not how supreme court go pass order say make them implement minimum wage for all workers and some states till now haven't carried out that order and nobody is hearing about it. This government no be democratic government again oo, no be government of the people, by the people and for the people again oo the people dey suffer no voice for the people no human right. Minimum wage is a right and shouldn't be something we should be pleading for.

If na person wey thief or person wey disobey law viral post everywhere, we self take hand dey support and hide the bad things wey our governmenst dey do.

The activity of certain Nigerian workers is dropping as a result of the high cost of living and the rise in petroleum prices. Even if the Nigerian government implements the new minimum wage, it will not benefit some Nigerians because the majority of individuals in some areas are not civil servants.

The issue is from the government and not the private sector.

I will agree with your opinion here as it relates to the economic matters of the nation. The private sectors as we all know is a profit oriented sector and as such would do everything possible to make profit so that their organization would keep running. You will agree with me that the private sector helps to cushion the unemployment rate in the society compared to the government sector as it is rare to see the government put up vacancy in the government parastatals but after  a long period of time compared to the private sector scattered everywhere looking for workers to fill up vacant positions in  their various offices and departments. They pay tax to the government which adds up to the internally generated revenue which is being added to the budget for development but the reverse is always the case when it comes to the government affairs.

The government is so corrupt now that even the name smells corruption itself, various positions is being reserved for family and friends before they think of doing recruitment if at all they have in mind to do so. The government should be in charge of running the economy effectively but the reverse is the case as they are just there looking for what to take away from the system, making things difficult for the citizens of the nation.  It would be very difficult to amend all these loopholes as the structure and system is already messed up and infiltrated by corrupt men in the helms of affairs in the nation.

Minimum wage in Nigeria it can lead to job loss, as the employers can afford to pay workers high wages. It can lead businesses to move overseas, where labour cost are cheap. Some people argue about the high minimum wage that it can lead to inflation, as the business may pass the cost of higher wages to consumers in form of high price. Additional higher minimum wage can help to reduce poverty and improve standard living. The main concern about minimum wage it causes job loss, as the employer's may not be able to afford to pay their worker's.Do you think these concerns will bring benefits of the minimum wage?
Minimum wage is something good but the question we supposed to ask ourselves as a concern citizen of the country is what are the percentage of unemployment and that of employees if the percentage of unemployment is higher than that of employees minimum wages is just a disaster to the societies because the more government increases the minimum wages that's how things in commodity will be increasing continuously and you as a small scale business owners how do you think you are going to survive, without affecting your business and that of your well being as well
