I agree, as far as my memory serves for the last few years, Switzerland has been oscillating a lot in their game - so at this championship they beat Hungary 3-1, then only played 1-1 against Scotland, and then almost beat Germany.

Italy literally made it out of the group with a goal in the last seconds against Croatia, because even if they had been third, they would not have progressed.

However, after obviously biased refereeing in that match, UEFA sent referee Danny Makkelie home, which means that they are very "satisfied" with the way he did his job.

Switzerland have been quite impressive in this competition, they are one of the drak horses, along side Austria too in my opinion, but I really would not read too much into their group stage performance, because the knockout stages is different level of ball game and there are very fine margins into why a team could advance or get eliminated. I'm still quite leaning towards the defending champions "Italy" to see off the Swiss side today, perhaps in a narrow and not so convincing fashion, but Italy going through is my big play here.

The both matches is going to be very interesting to watch especially the one between Switzerland and Italy because right from there group stage Switzerland has been very consistent and just like you said they have not lost any matches from there group stage unlike Italy that won a match, draw one and lose one.

So perhaps I think Switzerland has an upper chance to win the match because they are more impressive in performance than Italy, though I'm not saying that Italy is a weak team but my point is that so long as the season is concerned Switzerland has created more impressive impact than Italy.

However in terms of Germany and Denmark I'm also very confident that Germany will win them because Denmark has not been really too good in performance this season because if you follow up there matches you will see that they have not won any match and even the ones they had the opportunity of winning they could not even win so I believe that match should an easy one for Germany.

That was the very first upset of the knockout stage, and I'm sure that would serve as a reality check to other top favorites about the threats these underdogs can pose, although some teams have witnessed it first hand during the group stage. We probably would still one or two more upset over the next few days of this tournament.

The defending champions got their ass knocked out on a 2-0 clean sheet, which I never expected. Italy was unable to fight back because they gat no strategy and creativity. Switzerland dominated the game right from the first half to the end of the match while Italy was busy struggling to score one goal. Switzerland humiliated the Italians and penetrated their defense like nothing. The next match will be between Germany vs Denmark.

Switzerland and Austria have been very impressive in this tournament and I wouldn't say I'm surprised that they defeated Italy because Italy had been lacking in attack and have focused more on defensive in most of their game in this competition. Switzerland may face England If England are able to beat Slovakia. If that happens, England will be the team to be worried because Switzerland are a pain in the ass of big teams.

Germany about to play Denmark, will they be knocked out as the defending champions were?

Today first matches of round 16.
The result was quite surprising, Italy was defeated by Switzerland 2 - 0
In fact, Italy really lost in their attack line. Bad enough for those who finally had to admit Switzerland's superiority.

The two goal win for Germany did not come so easily because they had to fight and really struggle for it, Denmark was not an easy team for them to play.

There were many correct calls in the game from the officials that got two goals cancelled , one early goal from Germany,  and Denmark's goal that then led to the penalty that Germany got after the hand ball.

Havertz converted the penalty brilliantly, although he missed a couple of good opportunities to score more goals later in the game. Musiala doubled for Germany to secure their lead, and qualification to the next round.

This German team can actually win this competition.
