When it comes to security, it is recommended to use hardware wallets to handle cryptocurrencies for long-term storage of assets. Many also mention that Windows has its own security features such as Windows Defender, but for those who are serious about security, Linux may be the preferred option.

Mostly Windows (electrum) and Android. It's convenient for me that way!

I would love to try a hardware wallet though, but unfortunately crypto is still banned in my country. So I cannot directly purchase a hardware wallet or get my hands on one. Even if I did manage that, there could be consequences. I wouldn't dare to take that risk!

FWIW, you could build your own hardware wallet using general-purpose electronic components. For example, you could create your own Trezor[1] and Jade[2]. Although it requires you to have some electronics skill and cost of the component/tool could be expensive depending on where you live.

I took a look at the tutorial.

I don't think I have the ability to build one myself. I have absolutely zero knowledge of electronics or hardware. I don't know where to get the parts from or how to assemble all the parts. I've never touched a soldering device in my entire life!  :) I can't even print the enclosure myself since I don't have a 3D printer. Tbh, it's an impossible task for me at this moment! But thanks for the links, I never knew one could actually build one by themselves!

I remember someone using a USB device to install a live OS with Electrum in it. Have you tried doing similar things if you want to experience how to use a dedicated device to manage your crypto? At the very least it's much easier to setup, although the security and features can't really compare to a hardware wallet you build yourself.

If I remember correctly, I did something similar in the past! I used Tails (https://tails.net) to install a live OS on a flash drive. The problem is that as soon as the power is turned off, everything erases. They did have a persistent storage feature where you can install additional software and stuff, but I'm not sure whether a user has to log in every time they turn on the device or configure Electrum each time. Electrum does comes builtin in tails though! Anyway, I might have to test it myself.

Do you have any other alternative suggestions?

Tails is an excellent option
The fact that it is not persistent by default is excellent for creating seeds in Electrum, writing them down on a piece of paper and then having the system completely erased.
I've made a lot of seeds this way, I had an old laptop that I used to do this, and to this day I have several cold wallets that can be used

Generally, the safest recommendation is to download and check Electrum instead of using the one that comes with Tails.
And even common Linux installations can be used for this purpose, such as Mint or Ubuntu, which are more popular, but if you want a lot of privacy, Tails is the best option.

I have a hardware wallet but I also use windows for most of my access. I rarely use smart phones for my crypto wallets, the android OS.
Windows is common in our country and that's why that's also what I have. I wanna use mac OS soon for some reasons and also for work purposes but as of now, that's all that I have.

Technically, yes. That could be done too. Or I could just update the package! I have tried several Linux distros in the past, for example Mint, Ubuntu, Kali Linux, or Garuda Linux. And every time, I faced one or two issues. Recently, I installed Manjaro, but it had issues too. The screen would go blank/black randomly, probably due to video drivers fault, but I couldn't fix it. So I had to get back to Windows (again). It's like a loophole. I like a distro, I install it, face problems, and revert back to Windows again.

That is why Android (1st) and Windows (2nd) are my primary OS for crypto.

BTW, I'm thinking of trying a debian based distro! ;)

in using a wallet in crypto, I prefer to choose android because it is portable for me who has many activities. but for my main assets I prefer a wallet on my computer.
Privacy OS I prefer windows, because so far it is safe for android only for assets that I use for trading.

So what is everybody using for their crypto assets?

In an ideal world, we all would be using hardware wallets, but I'd understand if you do not use them for one reason or another (as long as you're not being reckless).

Also what operating system do you use for looking at / using crypto related stuff in general. Would be interesting to see if there is a derivation from the usual "80% Windows - 17% Mac, 3% Linux" sort of proportions that tell the market shares for normal users.

well its Mac OS and  a hardware  wallet.

and to try to say I use one more than the other is not very accurate.

I would say
 macOS 40%
hardware wallet 40%

windos
 linux
 android
Mac iOS   at 4% each

this is about as accurate as I can be.

I chose only Windows.  We should be able to select more than one operating system on the poll. I would have gone for both Windows and Android.

I have some coins on phone. I prefer to use open source wallet. So I did not see a good opened source wallet for Windows which support altcoins. I use Unstoppable wallet for altcoins which is a mobile wallet. For bitcoin I prefer Electrum and Sparrow on desktops but I also use Bluewallet for Android.
I think that you also create a best comment in your post. We also use different type of operating system to OS our crypto. I think that Windows is one of the best choose for me. But we also know that many of them also choice Android. I am also agree with them. But i believe that in this time windows is the best popularity among the general users. If we have some crypto in your phone and would not be created any wallet, then i believe that windows will be prefer in us.

Re: What's your primary OS for crypto?
« Reply #57 on: November 17, 2024, 12:09:32 PM »
I have a hardware wallet but I also use windows for most of my access. I rarely use smart phones for my crypto wallets, the android OS.
Windows is common in our country and that's why that's also what I have. I wanna use mac OS soon for some reasons and also for work purposes but as of now, that's all that I have.
This is wise in the context of a fully adopting cryptocurrency wallet which incorporates some level of hardware management with an aim of safeguarding all of our digital wealth from all forms of online vices. While we primarily work on Windows we also realise today that good security does not have to be out of reach. The most crucial thing is to ensure our operating system is always up to date, our wallet application is always secured and minimised risk of being hacked while on the net.

It is quite good to change to Mac OS in the future but first, the ecosystem should fit the needs of work and further enhance the convenience level. For the meantime though, safety can still be ensured with the use of the necessary precautions that are present in the digital world, these include installing a good antivirus software, and avoiding to downloading an application from unknown developers, and lastly using the two-part authentication wherever necessary. The following steps are useful to avoid losing possession of our assets until we are eager to switch to another device.

Precisely that is one of the characteristics that are sought when installing a live OS, that everything disappears when the machine is turned off, as a security measure it is relatively good not to leave certain traces. Virtually all Linux distributions (at least the most well-known ones) have a version of this type. As for whether Electrum is included in a distribution or not, it is not a problem, installing it will only take you two minutes even if you need to download it. It is a good alternative for users more focused on the security of their wallets.

Eumm..many say that Windows and Android are not the best choices for storing cryptocurrency assets, especially in large amounts... and since the hacking incident that happened to me personally, I have started to slightly shift my special wallet to store my BTC on a special device, namely iOS...

This is indeed a mobile device, but I only use it for basic cryptocurrency storage needs and it is completely free from internet connection... but I still use many wallets, one of which is also electrum on my Windows... I have a lot of storage, with the aim that when one of my wallets is targeted by hackers, at least it does not eliminate all the assets I have in the form of cryptocurrency.
