I think they are great. If they have their own finances for the project. Now many good projects do not need money to implement their project. Now mostly fraudulent projects are collecting money. I think next year everything will change for the better.

usually coins or tokens do ICO to promote their products. however there are also folk that do no longer undergo the ICO procedure a usual. CYFM and MFTU are tokens dispensed now not through the ICO mechanism and are indexed in lot of exchanges. This proves that this device without ICO may be achieved because also.

Siacash Coin, Bitcoin Token, Denta Coin are also exampes, they didn't launch the ICO. They reward their supporters via Airdrop and or Bounty. Now they (These tokens) are listed on so many exchanges. Successful project without ICO.

ICO free coins just released without ICO, or on closed type on ICO, like GRAM from telegram. They just regular coins.

I think that is a brave and trust attempt to finance own projects, because only the market can give you the right value.
So, if the project finds a way to be listed on some Exchange, it's the procedure that I prefer.
