Title: ✅ Stake your Bitcoin address
Post by: examplens on May 31, 2024, 02:09:15 AM
To convey the good things here as well. I don't know what the practice has been until now when it comes to the recovery of forum accounts here, I've only seen a few such requests.
Staking a Bitcoin address here can help a lot in the case of the need to prove the ownership of an account.

So it is necessary to leave a signed message here from an address to which have access. It is also necessary that any other member verify the message and confirm with a quote.
some ideal message formats:

username
purpose (Altcoinstalks)
address (it does not have to be an address that is actively used, but it is important that it is an address that is always accessed)
date

I'll start here:

Code: [Select]
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
I am examplens from Altcoinstalks, and this is my address 3FWdmutJ8pqH9D3VNd7j2BLBUXJv49qZxW (date 31 May '24)

-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Someone should verify the message and confirm by quoting the part of my post that refers to it.

Congratulations for creating this topic examplens. Great idea.

Maybe an alternative method here would be allowing users to also sign messages with ethereum, as this an altcoin forum.

Quoting for reference.

I'll start here:

That would certainly be interesting to have as an option.
Maybe someone could make a thread with explanations about the purpose and how to sign/verify the message. I have a feeling that there are a lot of crypto beginners here who have never used this feature. To learn something new, why not?

Is someone actually using signing and verifying messages on other blockchains?
I never heard about that and I never saw this was possible in all altcoin wallets I used.
I suppose this would be possible with bitcoin forks like Litecoin, BCH and others, but I am not sure about ethereum.

I know that people use metamask to sign stuff to log in. That can even be done with bitcoin using some wallets like UniSat (it is in my todo list to study)

It is also in my todo list make a tool similar to brainwallet to verify and a sign messages, which also accepts segwit (brain wallet doesnt)

Do you think people would use it?

You can with Ethereum too. That's not a problem.

In your data-science? It will be a very useful tool and this will also increase your visitors too.

In Trezor Suite, you can create a signed message using the ETH Address in Trezor (BIP137) or Electrum format (compatibility signature format).

However, currently the sign/verify ETH address feature is no longer available in MEW.

It can also be done on Ethereum without any problem. Here you have more information about it:

Code: [Select]
bc1qvu3k5x24jx53tglp2emj62yu9ffmsnpn646hjr

You need to sign a message using your address.

This is how you prove the ownership of your address. If someone hack your account, you could sign a message using this address proving the ownership (the hacker won't be able to do it).

So you can recover your account using your address.

This is how you sign

I know bitmover, but right now I don't have access to the wallet (I'm traveling) because I don't have it here, so for now I will leave it as it is now and when I have the opportunity I will do it with the signed message.

Thanks for your interest.

Do you think people would use it?
I don't think so.
Most people who are staking addresses here are coming from bitcointalk forum and they are all using bitcoin wallets/addresses for this purpose.

In Trezor Suite, you can create a signed message using the ETH Address in Trezor (BIP137) or Electrum format (compatibility signature format).
Yeah, I know Trezor Suite has nice tool for signing messages, question is if it's compatible with all other ethereum wallets.

I can confirm that for Monero coin you can use Feather wallet to sign/verify messages and it works almost identical like in Electrum wallet.
Other Monero wallets probably have something similar.

I will make just to learn bitcoinjs

I don't know if that is useful or not.. but well, maybe learning this is worth something in my life in the future.

It's a very useful thread created by examplens and I really appreciate that but when you use multiple wallets on daily basis then is it worth it to stake your Bitcoin address? I mean sometimes it's possible for hackers to steal someone's wallet information then in such case what do you guys prefer?

Is it possible to stake a Bitcoin address that you create on a offline machine or air gaped system? I believe it could be done with Electrum but I haven't done it with an cold wallet yet, but does anyone here doing it with cold wallet or you guys are stacking hot wallet address?

Of course you can.

Just sign the message offline and paste the signature here, just like you would do with a normal transaction, that you would only share the signature.

I signed using Ledger Nano S, which is also a cold wallet.

Even though I started this topic, any forum member can quote and verify the address. And it is desirable that the other members also join in this action. It could certainly be useful for less experienced members to learn new things.

Great to hear that, I will check my cold wallet and when I'm fully sure how it works then I'll stake my address here. I often change my wallets that's why I have to choose one that should be my main wallet used for the sake of stacking on the forums.

Yeah, I know Trezor Suite has nice tool for signing messages, question is if it's compatible with all other ethereum wallets.

I just tried to create a signed message on the ETH address in Trezor Suite using the Trezor Format.

Code: [Select]
Message: I am Husna QA (u=19772) from Altcoinstalks and today is 8 June 2024
Address: 0xbC677616997f46Cec2909AbdE3b72494D50EFF25
Signature: 96dba8dcaad65b7035a0e654e1239f9fa38eeed27155b4fdd30b8f8ee9ee6baf372269a8f07819fa52e77f8e5d4de9ce51db21c284aa8d4a6017d698a74ee5381c

To verify the signature, I tried using https://etherscan.io/verifiedSignatures# (https://etherscan.io/verifiedSignatures#). Here are the results:

As seen above, the information 'Invalid Length' appears in the Signature Hash section.
Therefore, it is necessary to add 0x* to the beginning of the Signature generated from Trezor Suite:

Code: [Select]
0x96dba8dcaad65b7035a0e654e1239f9fa38eeed27155b4fdd30b8f8ee9ee6baf372269a8f07819fa52e77f8e5d4de9ce51db21c284aa8d4a6017d698a74ee5381c
Result: Message Signature Verified

* However, if verified using Trezor Suite, there is no need to add 0x to the beginning of the Signature.

@OP, sorry, I tried to test the signed message using an address other than BTC.

Not a problem. This is quite useful to know about this possibility on other coins besides BTC.
It is certainly an idea primarily for staking addresses for the purpose of later proving the ownership of the account.

People who are longer in crypto space probably know it already, but this could be useful for newbies.
Electrum is first choice for most people, but I am not sure about mobile wallets.

For Bitcoin we have Sparrow wallet that you can add to your list of desktop wallets supporting this.
Feather wallet for Monero have option to sign and verify messages in desktop computers, and it works similar like with electrum wallet for bitcoin.
There are even some web tools that can be used for this purpose.

When you have a minute, add the following to the post. Thank you.

Web tools that allow you to verify signed messages:

⚡ Verify a signed bitcoin message (https://www.verifybitcoinmessage.com/).
⚡ Verify Bitcoin Signature (https://tools.qz.sg/).
⚡ Verify Message (https://www.bitcoin.com/tools/verify-message/).

And yes, I think more users should follow this practice to have a little more security on the forum and with their wallets.

You are welcome, I like to help whenever I can. I'm gathering more information about message signing and verification. There are many tools, but I want to do some testing first before putting them here.

In a few days I will update the post and let you know again.

Yes, I'm testing several things, that's why it's taking longer than I expected, but that's okay, I prefer to do it right even if it takes longer and make things very clear in case someone intends to use it. When I have everything ready I will post it here.

Don't be shy and stake your address to have an extra help in the security of your account on the forum. It doesn't cost anything, and as examplens says, you can do it with different wallets. All the necessary information is in the OP of this thread.

What wallet are you using to sign a message?
I would suggest using Electrum wallet for that instead of web wallets.
First tiny mistake I saw in your message is date, today is September 5, not September 9, but that won't affect your signed message.
Than someone else needs to verify signed message, it doesn't make sense for you to sign and verify in the same time.

Why is the Bitcoin address linked?
As far as I know, the forum does not do this automatically. Did you do it on purpose or did it happen during the transmission here?
Also, you transferred the [/size] tag, which can introduce additional confusion.
It seems to me that you made a mistake in the transfer of the text, and copy/paste mess, so I would start checking from there.
It is probably better to use the CODE tag to post signed messages here

Which wallet do you use for sign messages?

He purposefully added a link (using blockchain.com) to his BTC address.
As far as I know, the Bitcoin address sign messaging application does not have a format that can make text into hyperlinks.

I tried to verify the signature, but the result was false:

I also tried creating a signature with the same message and using my BTC address. The result was true.

So, the message format is no problem. The problem is possibly in the signature, such as characters not being copied or something else.

Based on his post structure (so many fonts, size, color tags) looks like he just added the link when posting.

...
I suggest to do sign a message again, and avoid using "()" parenthesis characters, next line (enter) to avoid this kind of error, plus use the code tag when posting the signed characters/message.

Otherwise, any user is free to verify the signed message of another user. It is not mandatory that I do it as the thread starter, on the contrary, I would like more members to get involved.

I think you are wrong in the text transfer itself. Maybe try using the "code" tag.
And in the previous post where you wrote your address, somehow the closing size tag [/size] was added. Of course, do not use any text editing, size, bold or similar.

here wallet address: 1B2Afp9GBjTqrR3fb9M8vV8N2qdzVG4DN8[/size]

It is not necessary for it to be the Bitcoin address you use otherwise, it is only important that you always have access to it, because it serves to confirm the ownership of the account.

Currently, I am having difficulty accessing the blockchain.com site. I can not try directly signing a message using the Bitcoin address on the wallet.

I want to use same wallet if possible, if message format is wrong maybe I can use different one?

Do you still save the seed phrase/private key from the wallet address you use at blockchain.com?
If yes, try using Electrum. First, import the seed phrase to create a new wallet, then sign a message on Electrum.

I think bitcoinjs is not outdated.

AFAIK there is no bitcoin core standard for bech32 address verification. It is a non standard verification.  It was first created by electrum wallet, and I think other wallets/websites are just using their code.

This website can verify signed messages from bech32

What i mean is the bitcoinjs file i have, is only the outdated one as i learned you can compile your own bitcoinjs file. I actually tried different compiled bitcoinjs like 3 of them already and this is the only works for bech32 addresss but with error.

You have the list of mobile wallets that are supporting signing of messages, but there are probably few more wallets that can do this if you want to explore it.
This is free to do and you don't have to pay any fees for this messages, so there is no reason why you can't do it from mobile phones.
I can confirm that Blockstream Green is another mobile wallet that supports signing of messages, and it can be added to the list:

why cant one show a doge address virgin put in some doge and take it out instead of signing an address.

Or an ltc address for that matter.

it does cost a bit for fees but that supports the particular net work you move the doge in and our of. while signing causes a bit of traffic at no cost and does not support the coin or network.

Signing messages causes no traffic on the network, it is a local operation. You basically make a mathematical calculation locally with your private keys while signing. There is no cost neither traffic. it doesn't even go to the blockchain. It is the most common and most recommended way to prove ownership of an address.

Actually, you don't need to sign a message here, but if anyone wants to recover their account they can sign a message later on using any other address he said he owned by the time. This just things easier to use it for that purpose.;

if you sign and someone wants to verify it it creates traffic at no cost to you or the person checking it.  but it does cause traffic. to nodes to confirm the signature.  so i consider it to be leaching a bit from the particular blockchain you use.

but if I show

tx abc sending 1 doge to address virgin 123
then
tx edf pulling 1 doge from address virgin 123

it proves i own the address and sends fees to the doge most likely doge or ltc.

this why i am anti address signing.

but hey I get that people like free vs pay.

That is not how it works. Nodes do not verify signatures. It generates zero traffic.

It is a mathematical operation which is done offline and locally in your device.

Try for yourself:

Disconnect from the internet and verify a few messages.

I recovered my BTT account succesfully, my account wasn't teleported

Can you provide proof that the EmoneyABC account was your previous account?
Have you ever staked a Bitcoin address on Bitcointalk using your hacked account?

Even now, at Altcoinstalks, I have yet to be able to verify the signature message from the BTC address that he (EmoneyABC) claims.

no i wasn't been able to do it, i tried but somehow i couldn't and stopped, you can check the thread

most important to remove scam thread and ban account

so they wont scam anybody!

but I can do it using my Bitcointalk account and despite are not teleported is obvious and many forum members know both are mine, even admin we DMed multiple times
When did this happen, i.e. since when do you not have access to your Altt account?
After the problem on Bitcointalk, now the same thing here. It seems that you have not eliminated the problem, but it is still current in some of your devices. You should approach everything much more seriously, the damage can be much greater than hacking a forum account.

The idea of stake a Bitcoin address is very useful and that's why it was started here, I don't know why users are afraid to do it, it costs nothing and requires very little time.

I agree that i haven't eliminated problem fully after the first hack on Bitcointalk account

I was sure that I changed passwords everywhere on important accounts, but somehow I left Altcoinstalk account with old and totally shitty password like 12345

so now I am not sure if this is related to this earlier hack (probably yes) or somebody brute forced my Altcoinstalk account - am not so advanced in this topic but my password was so shitty that i was surprised to see it in this account

changed many password and forgot about this one

Fully agree that people should stake their address and for sure I will do it, tried but couldn't do that somehow with the Blockchain.com wallet, despite it was successful for Bitcointalk

PS
I have recovered successfully my account, thanks to MrSpasybo and Admin help
thank you both one more time

Your case seems much more complicated and I don't think it's enough to just change passwords. I am telling you this because of an earlier personal bad experience.

Likewise, do you have and do only you have control over this account wwzsocki (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=324748.msg1652492#new)?
It is very strange that you almost urgently teleported that account here to point out the problems with the EmoneyABC account, and then in the middle of all that, 'you' left a prediction in the Mixero raffle, where the deadline for participation has expired while using a completely new Bitcoin address.

This does not look like an experienced member, I am definitely expressing my doubts here about who controls the wwzsocki account.
I sincerely advise you to check your devices well, it would be very wise to start with a completely new OS and make an effort to sign and stake one of your older Bitcoin addresses. Ideally one that you have already proven on Btt.

So, has the admin recovered your account, and is the wwzsocki account currently under the control of the same person?
If yes, then one of them should, as far as I know, be labeled a duplicate account.

- Rules concerning multi accounts (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=319400.0)
- Declare your duplicate account (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=319399.0)

As far as I know, a seed phrase for the address generated from Blockchain.com can be seen. You can import this seed phrase to another wallet, such as Electrum, and then create a signed message using Electrum.

I will quote the whole post as support for the initiative that Freemind started.
Earn Karma by securing your account (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=326454)
Staking a Bitcoin address is a proven way to provide additional protection for your forum account.
I would also encourage those who may not know how to do it, to ask here for help. This is just one of the useful features offered by Bitcoin and its blockchain, and it is desirable to know at least a little about it.

Due to possible limitations of SMF (forum version: SMF 2.0.15) or the difficulty of implementing 2FA (I'm not 100% sure it's possible) on the forum to give greater security to user accounts, I thought I'd start this thread.

One way to give a certain degree of greater security to our accounts is by signing a message from one of our wallet addresses. For that reason, I thought that users who sign a message and put it in a post in this thread, created by examplens, will get additional Karma.

✅ Stake your Bitcoin address (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=321705.0).

In that thread the necessary information is available to know how to sign a message with some Bitcoin wallets, and also how to do it with wallets of other coins.

Users with negative badges will not get additional Karma. Those users have to solve other things first.

Users with negative Karma also have a chance. They will get +2.

Users with positive Karma with a rank equal to or lower than Sr. Member will get +4.

Users with positive Karma with Hero member rank or higher will get +8.

Users who have already signed their message in the thread since its start (May 31, 2024) will receive their Karma during the next 24 hours.

I tried to verify it with Electrum and this was the result:

Back in the old days , i received quite a few airdrops just by signing a message from a bitcoin address with balance before X date.

Signing a bitcoin message is the first step towards using better wallets and understanding the protocol better

For mobile users, I use coinomi,  which allows signing messages and coin control, another important bitcoin feature

What is the status of your signed message verification tool at https://pxzone.online/
Did you correct the errors that appeared, if not, do you want to deal with the further development of that tool?
It would be great if we could use a tool made by forum users for this purpose.

I can't find any available open-source project that will be used for reference, that is up to date with Electrum standard, that is also available for my system's programming language, but I'm currently working/learning with nodejs; maybe I'll go with Python, too, lol.

Up this thread.
Add another level of forum account protection.
Also, Freemind additionally rewards karma points for those who stake a BTC address here. (I can add myself with +1 karma as much as my rank allows.)

I used Electrum to sign a message on Bitcointalk, but here I would like to sign a message from another wallet that I use on Altcoinstalks. And I was surprised to find that this feature is missing from Unisat and Xverse wallets. Or maybe I haven't found how to do it?

tvplus006 to be honest, this is the first time I've read anything about the wallets you mention. Even so, I have decided to look for a little information about them and the truth is that I have not found much in terms of practical examples.

The only thing I have found about how to sign messages with UniSat is in the documents on the official website: https://docs.unisat.io/dev/unisat-developer-center/unisat-wallet#signmessage

In the case of Xverse, the documentation I found is similar: https://docs.xverse.app/sats-connect/bitcoin-methods/signmessage

The curious thing is that these wallets are not new, but have been in development for a few years, so it seems very strange to me not to find practical examples.

The wallets mentioned are not bitcoin wallets like you we are used to.

They are web3 wallets, like metamask. But they are for bitcoin chain, web 3 on bitcoin

They allow to login to websites, hold brc20 tokens and nft. They have a different purpose compared to electrum

You're right. After writing my last post, I kept reading and finally found more documentation on those two wallets and they work as you say.

I suppose that many people will find them useful, but I prefer to continue using Electrum, at the moment there is no other wallet that I like more.

Thanks for the information.

+1.

I just want to say that securing your account by staking your Bitcoin address here not only offers a little more security to your forum account, but forum users who do so will also receive some additional Karma, something that will be very useful when Karma is needed to reach new ranks.

That's something that will happen sooner or later.
