« on: February 26, 2024, 06:22:09 PM »
Minimum wage in Nigeria it can lead to job loss, as the employers can afford to pay workers high wages. It can lead businesses to move overseas, where labour cost are cheap. Some people argue about the high minimum wage that it can lead to inflation, as the business may pass the cost of higher wages to consumers in form of high price. Additional higher minimum wage can help to reduce poverty and improve standard living. The main concern about minimum wage it causes job loss, as the employer's may not be able to afford to pay their worker's.Do you think these concerns will bring benefits of the minimum wage?

Minimum wage isn't the way to alleviate poverty right now in Nigeria, doing that only is the same thing as going round in circles because it's not going to make any significant change. The cost of things must be reduced before thinking about increasing the minimum wage. Right now in Nigeria what an average household spends in a week is more than that wage they are increasing it to, the inflation is the main thing that should be tackled

The cost of things must be reduced before thinking about increasing the minimum wage. Right now in Nigeria what an average household spends in a week is more than that wage they are increasing it to, the inflation is the main thing that should be tackled

According to the statement released by the NLC chairman he claimed that the president had betrayed them - he said the federal government agreed on their demand and increased the minimum wage of government workers but then made the situation of the whole country even more difficult for them and the effect of the increased salary cannot even be felt due to the increased inflation in the country.

There are so many things that need to be worked on first before increasing the salary of workers because if they just do it I’ll will just be like them watery a dead plant and expecting the most bountiful harvest from it.

I don't know but I think I have answered something like this before either here or the other forum. you see my brother this whole matter is like medicine after deaths because if the government has refused to tackle inflation and went ahead increasing minimum wage it's like pouring sugar on the ground and expect no ant to come perch on it.. usually before doing that there should be modalities to bring down the inflation to suit with the salary they are paying across the country. There should be a regulatory body to monitor price of goods and commodities and let there be an equilibrium of price.

This increase in minimum , to me has more disadvantage than advantage.  The Employers of several business setups facing higher wages might end up reducing workers because the money is too much for them, which will lead to people loosing their jobs Businesses could also pass these costs to consumers thereby causing inflation in the cost of goods and servivmces. However, a higher minimum wage can also improve living standards and reduce poverty as workers earn more. Striking a balance is crucial setting a wage that supports workers without burdening businesses or harming the economy will be key for Nigeria's growth.

Minimum wage increase or decrease I think that might not even help our country. However it might have immediate help but can't keep up with the beautiful future. That means it will leave nija in more hell in time.
Our naira go survive at all?
Look this queries
Is it easy to make 50,000 dollars monthly for develop countries?
I think you Sabi the answer?
That means minimum wage increase is not the problem.

Industrialization is the way forward to renforcement of our economy.
good governance and good followership don die for we 9ja. That will cure our naira. And these issues of minimum wage go disappear.

This issue of minimum wage got me thinking so much that I began to wonder if the government really mean well for her citizens or what? First thing first, the economy of the nation is on a free fall that it needs intervention. Addressing the economy should be the utmost priority of the government because even after implementing the minimum wage and the economy is still getting worse, then it is of no value implementing the minimum wage because the situation would get worse than it was which is currently happening.

Currently, it is as if  it doubled times two to having a down tone on the masses which the minimum wage itself can not be able to sustain the average worker. The NLC itself made a big mistake accepting to sign such agreement with the federal government knowing fully well how they could be most times. Now it seems as if they heard about the minimum wage and have decided to double the cost of living that the minimum wage would be of no value.

Necessary economic policy should be implemented and agencies for food price control should be ordered to carrying out their task and be void of corrupt practices. Only then would the economy and price of food stuffs be okay and affordable.

That minimum wage that was increased was as a result of the threat of workers shutting down all their activities which would have led to a massive increase in hunger - that was the reason the government decided to increase it.

Exactly because he knows that the matter what he will find him way to the throne with money and he did it. And the problem we have in the country is the judiciary in election matter dem. And as for me, the citizens would have been the best option to reset the country to the normal way as it was before but the stupid police e no dey allowed the citizens to do the real protest in the country. But I still know that one day haphazard way the police need go happened.

That minimum wage of 70k na scam and NLC dey complain say na deceived president take deceived them accept the 70k. And the agreement was if NLC accept di 70k, fuel price go come down and prices of food and services sef go come down but irony nai be the talk of the day now. Mr president said in China that him go take another hard decision to make things go up to develop di country. Now how can you develop your own country when your citizens dey cry for hungry. Him no dey think? Na bloody revolution go stop all these nonsense.

The minimum wage was a scam, the government never had it to making sure the economy was stable. After the approval of the minimum wage, they increased fuel price and the market went haywire till this very moment fuel price is still on the high side increasing every day. The current government does not mean well for the nation otherwise there are some decisions worth taking to cushion the effect of the hardship  and it takes only bold and committed leadership to doing do. Billions of naira was spent on renovating aso villa what for? the national house are just there as rubber stamp members dancing to the tone of their paymaster. As it stands now the minimum wage is of no effect because a bag of rice now is above the minimum wage tag so would you say that is okay.

Do you think these concerns will bring benefits of the minimum wage?

Employers of labour that cannot pay their employees are not forced to pay them the minimum wage at that time at which it’s implemented. The government is the regulating body but when they make things hard for this private sectors employer of labour to afford to pay their workers fees, they can’t question them or halt their businesses. It’s a clear and proven fact that an increased minimum wage can lead to job loss, but in a system that not every tier of government obeys the minimum wage, there’s nothing they can do to the private sectors when they follow orders. You can’t be a victim of what you’re trying to stop.

You are on point, increasing the minimum wage when the prices of goods are still on the high rise is absolutely ridiculous, if the minimum wage is finally increased to 70 thousand naira how much is a bag of rice or other things in the market right now? Looking at this critically you would see that the minimum wage has no value because things are extremely expensive, the average man can't provide for himself comfortably in this economy

Until someone is able to convince me fully, I will keep saying that there are three problems we are having in this country. The problems are NLC, NUJ, and our representative. These 3 things I just mentioned are not supposed to be a subject to the government, but it turns out that they are already a subject. I remembered vividly the day the NLC announced a minimum wage of N70K. I was very disappointed. At first, they requested for a living wage of around 200K(if am not mistaken), but ended up agreeing on a N70K wage. NLC were actually the ones with demands, but the government ended up giving them two options, and that was, to either accept N77K for five years with no option to review, or accept N70K for three years with an option to review the salary and make possible upgrades. I see those two options as a slap to the face of the NLC, as the NLC don't longer know how powerful they are. We all know how well our senators and house of rep member are paid. Why should the civil servants be different?.

If the Nigerian federal government refused to subsidies fuel for everyone, even if they increased the minimum wage above what was promised, nothing is going to change. It will only increase inflation and since the dollar as the reserve currency is now open market, it's expected to rise again and automatically the price of goods and service will increase.

If the Nigerian government can't properly monitor fuel subsidy and reverse back some policies, the price of things might come down because fuel price determines if things are going to be cheap or costly and that's the only thing that poor masses enjoy from the government, the rest benefit goes to the rich people who have money already.

Nigeria is on a reverse gear aimlessly without direction. The federal government blackmailed NLC to agreeing for ₦70k and addressing the economic issues but upon approval, the economy became worse to say. Currently a litre of fuel is #1350, transportation is on the high side, food items on the rise and every thing is virtually inflating. Is it that the government economic team has nothing to profer to this economic crises.

It is very disappointing that Nigeria cannot refine product but depends on foreign refinery for products when Nigeria is a commercial quantity producers. It is a shame that things has gone worse than we least expected it to. What a country.
